How to Use Forums as Social Media Marketing Tools

Use forums as Social Media Marketing tools. Many people who run forums generally create them for building a community of people with the same likes and interests or as an addon for their websites with FAQ and Q&A sections. Forums, however, can be used for other purposes and today I want to talk about usage of forums as a social media marketing tool.

Who is going to visit it?

There are two groups of people visiting forums – constant community members and guests. The former ones use forums on regular basis not only for resolution of their issues but also for communication; the latter visit forums occasionally, mainly through search engines. They do not register, but simply find answers to their questions and leave. If they find the forum useful, they may bookmark it and even recommend to friends, but even then there is no guarantee they will become active users.
If you run a narrow-oriented forum (e.g. a special forum under a website), you need to understand that there will be not that many guests. Neither should you expect a big number of community members, even if you have many customers/users, as most of them simply use your services/buy your products without thinking of joining communities, sharing ideas, leaving testimonials, etc. This is the point you need to change in order to make it work for you.

Making a Forum a Social Media Marketing Tool

First of all, let us identify what our social media oriented forum is going to bring us. Traffic, of course! More traffic and more potential customers/users. The way it is going to work is a multi-step strategy you need to follow:

1. Create and strengthen your community

Before attracting new users you need to make sure the current ones are happy with your services and interested in your project. This requires you to make those users active, which in turn requires the content on your forum to be interesting, up-to-date and original.
If you have a blog or a newsfeed, do not make your forum posts duplicate this news. On the contrary, post things, which will be available to the forum visitors only. If you launch a new promo, put this news in a forum thread and let it be discussable, while the newsfeed will only announce the promo launch (but not the details).

2. Make your forum wider

Working with internal information only (company news, services discussion, customer tips and tricks) is not going to make non-customers interested in your forum. Therefore, what you need to do is to widen the horizons – watch the news around the business you do, post interesting and original articles in a separate thread or sub-forum and let them be discussed.
This strategy is going to kill two birds with one stone – your present customers will have more topics to discuss and to follow, which might make them more active; and you are going to get guest-visitors – some may find you on Google and other search engines and some may be invited by your current customers. The latter ones are very important as far as the “Tell a Friend” thing does work wonders with many services.
Even if your customers’ friends are not interested in your project (yet), they may be interested in the things around it. Even if they do not purchase anything from you, they are likely to bring more drive into your forum. This is going to do you good, too.

3. Get more admins

Forum administration takes much time, so once your forum becomes more or less active, try to get more admins. You can sign-up some of your co-workers for it, but it would be better to let your most active users do it.
The latter way is especially desired if those users are your affiliates. This is going to both increase their interest in your project development and bring them more money.

4. Get it linked!

Cross-linking is very important. If your forum just says “My Company’s Forum”, don’t expect people to type your website name in the browser. You need to have the logo linked to your website.
But that’s not all. Whatever you post and however related to your website it is, you need to have the correspondent URLs linked to your main site. This will let you gain more traffic from the users and your site – be better recognized by search engines.
If a forum is an essential part of your website, it is reasonable enough to make it work as a tool for obtaining new contacts and more traffic. Social media marketing is very important nowadays, as whatever the services or goods you offer, you will find many competitors trying to beat you in this competition.
A well-built social media promotion strategy, however, may let you leave them far behind you and bring your company to the top of the market.

6 Ways to Sell a Website, and 4 Ways Not to Sell One

This guest post is by Mathew Carpenter of Sofa Moolah.

It’s gotten harder and harder to generate a stable income as an affiliate over the past two years. From Facebook’s decidedly anti-affiliate mindset, to the lengthy list of regulations that search engines such as Google have released, generating stable, consistent, and stress-free paid traffic isn’t as simple as it once was. For thousands of affiliates, it’s been a major frustration and a potential business killer.

But alongside the “Google slaps” advertisement disapprovals and the massive flock to second-tier ad networks is a change in the mindset of many affiliates. Instead of focusing on the hustle of direct-response advertising, many successful affiliates and product owners alike are looking to search or socially-powered websites as a source of traffic, a source of sales, and as a source of income.

I’ve been following this same formula—alongside some other online business models—for the past few years, and while it’s far from the cash cow that a giant advertising campaign can be, it’s a form of income that’s significantly more reliable and steady. Advertising and sales checks from blogs and search-powered websites tend to be quite constant—at least more so than the average ad campaign.

Six steps to a successful site sale

These six rules—and four anti-rules—can help you develop and sell your own web properties, to generate a strong and reliable sideline income in addition to your main online venture. Despite the comfort of steady and recurring passive income, it’s often the case that you need short-term cash to fund other websites or advertising projects. In that case, be sure to put these six tips for selling your website into action.

1. Understand your website’s long-term value in advance

The average sales price of a successful website tends to range from six to ten times its profit on a monthly basis. While this can sound fairly hefty—particularly for a website that generates several thousand dollars monthly—it’s really a fraction of the type of value assigned to offline businesses.

Think about Facebook’s current valuation—the ludicrously high $50 billion. Does this reflect the website’s current earnings? No. While the website is profitable by all accounts, it’s far from those levels of profitability. The valuation reflects the website’s long-term value—something that can be applied to your own websites too.

So instead of thinking in terms of short-term revenue for your website and monthly profit, think in terms of your website’s potential for revenue growth over time. If you’re trying to sell a site that’s a real social media hit, for example, or a website with a growing search presence, use this potential as an indicator of its value and price it accordingly.

2. Know your audience, and know how to sell them

The biggest mistake I see being applied to website sales is one that’s repeated in almost all aspects of online marketing: using the same tactics for very different audiences. Just as you’d use different sales tactics to sell a car than you would to sell a bag of candy, you need to use different tactics to sell different types of websites.

Know your audience, and understand how they’re going to respond to your website auction. On one of the bigger marketplaces like Flippa, it’s important to remember that people value revenue data or profit information above anything else. For an independent website investor, information about your website’s potential for growth may be more important.

3. Research successful website sales before listing your own

When asked about how he acquires new skills quickly, productivity guru (and now fitness author) Tim Ferriss explained that it’s best to look at people who have achieved massive success in a short amount of time. It’s a philosophy that can be applied to everything from online marketing to selling your own websites, and it always produces good results.

Instead of going with your gut when deciding on how to present your website for sale, look at other websites that have achieved high sales prices in the past. What information do they disclose? Which sales tactics and pitches do they use to frame the auction? By reverse-engineering sales information from successful website auctions, you can vastly improve the results of your own.

4. Take steps to optimize profits before making a listing.

There’s nothing worse than seeing a website for sale that’s barely been optimized. From blogs that lack even the most basic advertising to affiliate websites that reek of poor conversion testing, if an online property hasn’t been optimized, it’s never going to reach its true value at sale. If your site is on the market without any profit optimization, you’re making a huge (and potentially costly) error.

Test different advertising networks, different ad creatives, and different affiliate offers on your site before you put it up for auction. Test different ad placement, different monetization methods, and a lengthy list of different lead capture strategies. Unoptimized (or poorly optimized) websites can be great deals for buyers, but they’re never a good option for you as the seller.

I’ve optimized many of the websites I’ve sold to increase profits by as much as 415% before making a sale. Small changes, particularly to the wording surrounding your call-to-action text or ad placement, can make a huge difference in the amount of income that your website generates.

5. Use a popular outlet that attracts the right audience

There are hundreds of auction sites out there that allow you to list your website, but only a select few are worth your time. The most popular is Flippa, which, despite its reputation for occasional shady websites, is actually the best option out there. I’ve sold two websites on Flippa for mid four-figure sums recently, one of which achieved an ROI of over four hundred percent.

Don’t, however, confuse a large audience with a good audience. If you own a website in a specific niche, for example, it’s almost always better to appeal to others in your niche directly instead of an all-purpose outlet like Flippa. As I said in step two, it’s important to know the type of people you’re marketing to, not just the amount of potential buyers that you have access to.

6. Minimize “fluff” statistics, and focus on the substance

“Fluff” statistics are, to me, information that’s impressive when explained in an auction, yet utterly meaningless when it comes to your website’s ability to generate income or influence change. The types of statistics I’m talking about are total pageview information—generally information that has no tie to real profitability—or data about how much traffic your website generates in total.

Instead of offering this type of information to potential bidders, highlight your website’s strengths and offer real data to buyers. Talk about how many unique visitors your website gets, your biggest traffic sources, and the value of a visitor to your website. “Fluff” statistics are only worth mentioning in one situation: your website is overvalued and you’re desperate to complete the sale quickly.

How not to sell your website

I’ve mentioned what you should do when selling your website. Now, it’s time to cover some of the most common errors that are made by those auctioning websites. While some of these tactics can help you, particularly if your website isn’t valuable, most will push away the types of buyers you want to attract. Ignore them at your own peril, as they’re definitely techniques to be avoided.

1. Load your auction with worthless data and needless hype.

Nobody cares about your blog’s unique design, its flashy navigation system, and the level of praise it has received from others in your niche. They do care about its potential for generating revenue or, in rare circumstances, its level of influence in its niche. In most cases, it’s best to leave subjective data such as critical praise or “best blog in ___” type feedback off your website’s auction page.

On the same note, don’t load your auction page with fifty-point red headers and sales copy. Look at rule two again—you’re marketing your website to other marketers. Instead of pulling out every last direct response trick in the book, offer information that’s of value to people. It’s very hard to sell to marketers, and it only gets worse when you employ the same tactics that they use on a daily basis.

2. Capitalize on temporary fads, short-term events, and crazes

I see this type of mistake all the time on Flippa. Marketers—typically newbies—buy a domain that is loosely related to the latest celebrity death, put up a generic two-page WordPress site, and think it could be the next big thing. These auctions tend to be loaded with potential-driven sales copy and an overwhelming contempt for their potential customers, all in an effort to make a quick buck.

Here’s what they all have in common: they rarely, if ever, make a decent profit. While the owners of these websites may make a few dollars on the sale, it’s rarely enough to even consider. The best type of website for onward sales is one that’s loaded with long-term potential, not some hyped-up spur-of-the-moment domain name.

3. List your website but make little or no effort to monetize it

The only thing worse than overselling a website, as above, is underselling it by failing to spend any time on monetization. This mistake is constantly be made on Flippa, although unlike many of these errors, which are made by newbies, it’s the professionals that tend to make this one. Always short on time and challenged by other projects, they list websites without even trying to monetize them.

Any signs of profitability—even a Google Adsense block atop your page—are a good thing for lifting your sales price. While websites occasionally sell based on their unrealized potential alone, it’s not at all a common occurrence. Take the time to test your website’s profitability level, and even when it’s not a winner, let people know that it’s at least capable of generating income.

4. Defining your website’s potential without thinking long-term

Browse any auction website and you’ll see descriptions where the merchant has been, shall we say, a little too optimistic about their website’s future. No, it probably won’t become the next Facebook, and no, it probably won’t triple its revenue in two months. While these examples take long-term prediction to its extreme, they’re a good indicator of how a little long-term thinking can help with your sales.

Website aren’t bought to immediately be flipped—at least, not in most cases. For the most part, they are bought as a fairly long-term investment (by online standards). Be upfront and clear about how your website is performing now, but don’t forget to include a description—even quite a salesy description—of how it could perform in the future.

Have you successfully sold a website before? If so, how did it go? Did you break even, lose money, or make a profit on the sale?

Leave your own experiences in the comments and let me know if you’ve got any suggestions on how to sell websites more effectively. I’ve seen plenty of very different techniques do well in this field, and it’s always an interesting to experience how well people are doing with less orthodox tactics.

Blogger Adsense Templates - They Can Make You Money?

The business blogs exist to promote, sell and introduce products and services to the public for a profit. If the public does not know that your blog exists, and believe me the internet is HUGE, you can get unnoticed so simple. So, getting visitors to come to your blog and make enough purchases for your business to survive will almost always fail without some additional help. To survive you need to advertise. Advertising is an important factor in business because it gets the word out about your blog and establishes a presence about what you are offering. One of the best ways to advertise is by word of mouth, also known as referral marketing or referral advertising. When other people hear good things about your business or they have a positive experience with your business, they become walking billboards for your business without you having to spend additional money on ads to create it. There are a lot of advertising-companies on the internet offering their services for you to use. Nothing is stopping you to have several advertising campaigns running. However, apart from the 'standard' advertising campaigns, you have to start thinking out of the box. If you want to get your 'name' known it is a must, start thinking outside the box, for the simple reason; not only you are trying to establish a name. Have you ever considered sponsoring? A sponsorship doesn't have to cost much, you can have a Do Follow link on a frontpage with a PR4 blog for 5 dollars per month, or a single donation of 3 dollars. Also consider other methods of advertising, think of press-releases. The power of a press release can be enormous, if your press release is noticed and re-printed by other online/offline media … you have free exposure all over the world. I will share a little technique here, if you issue a press release that explains about a research 'your company' has done, you stand a better chance to see it all over. A lot of marketing agencies are using this trick/technique, instead of issuing a standard press-release about a new computer that has been made. They release 'research findings' … For example: 'The R&D department of Company X' examined what type of hormones are released when people are exposed to new gadgets. One hundred test subjects revealed that the emotional etc etc etc … Releasing 'a study' can have a better ROI than anything else, except word of mouth.
Google Adwords

Google Adwords, do you know that you can have a campaign running for 1 cent per click. That is a 1000 visitors for 10 dollars, and yes you can start with 10 dollars. In term of marketing budgets in the real business world, 10 dollars is a no brainer. If it fits the purpose, and for starters that purpose should be to attract visitors. You want to get your name out there, and people coming inside. Bounce rate on my campaign was less than 40% … I don't sell anything on my website, all I am after is traffic … so 1 cent per visitor fits my needs perfectly. I tested Adword campaign a few weeks ago for the first time and just for a single day. In a single day of trying using some low-cost keywords, my ad was shown 49327 times, how many people actually noticed my ad is impossible to tell. From those 49327 impressions, two (2) people actually clicked on my ad, costing 2 cents .. In my mind I was thinking; that's another 2 visitors that are aware that my site exists. And if I look at it from an even more positive perspective, 49327 impressions, that to me means, a portion of those 49327 people saw my Hot Blog or Not.com Campaign running ;-) . The general idea about all of the above is, if you start a business you need to advertise and it does not have to cost much. You have to invest, if you run an internet operation alone you should consider a budget of 100 dollars per month to start with. If your blog will start bringing in revenue you can consider having a marketing budget of 10% of the revenue.
Backlinks and sponsorships

Everyone needs backlinks, a good place to start looking is digitalpoint.com – there is a lot of linking business going on there. I have been on that forum for a while now, and tested a few things myself. Sometime ago I read on a blog that people are selling sponsor links on links on Wordpress themes. I never even noticed that on Digitalpoint, but of course I was very interested. I tried out two different methods; I bought a sponsor link for 100 dollars (high premium Wordpress theme) and one for 15 dollars, good looking theme suitable for a lot of different blog businesses. Both themes are downloaded a few hundred times, and I guess the majority of people install the themes and also delete them again, I think they do because I have seen just two or three back links from sponsoring themes, and don't forget most of them have 0 page rankings. It is a good idea though, but don't spend more than 8 – 15 dollars. In my humble opinion, you will have much better results with sponsoring a link on a PR4-5 blog for 5 – 10 dollars per month.
Backlinking

Of course backlinking is important, but even in this arena you have to consider what is worthy and what not. I have paid for a service to have my website submitted to 600 directories. They did their business well because soon after I paid for their service I was busy for a day cleaning my inbox with clicking on "… to submit your site to our directory, you have to validate your email by clicking here …" This has been almost two months ago now, meanwhile I stopped checking with Google if my link is shown in any of the directories my website is submitted to. Simply because there I can count the links in those directories on Google in one hand, anyway … every SEO dude will tell you that this is absolutely needed, so I do it … the service only costs 6 dollars. My main backlinking part is still done with commenting on blogs, and posting an article on voting boards, like mine … HotBlogorNot.com There are three things every starter has to keep in mind;
Have a budget for marketing purposes
Don't be afraid to try out new things
Never stop creating backlinks!

How To Get Your New Website Indexed Quickly

Within this article, I will reveal to you the steps to getting your new website indexed quickly. With massive amounts of new websites pouring into the internet on a daily basis, it is absolutely crucial that you as a webmaster invest time into getting your website indexed.
For many people, getting search engine spiders to crawl their content for the first time is one of the toughest things to do. And even tougher still is the task of getting those spiders to come back and crawl your content on a regular basis. But alas, it is possible to get your brand new website crawled, indexed and visited frequently by search engine spiders – you just have to know the right tricks!
Get indexed
This is completely possible for even the novice webmaster who knows nothing about how websites work. The reason why I can say this is because I was a complete novice as well, but I managed to get my website crawled and indexed within the first 48 hours of it being on the web. Sweet deal, right?!?!!?
I want to share with you exactly what I went through in order to get my website crawled and indexed so quickly, and hopefully you will find it helpful, insightful, beneficial and inspirational. Without further adieu, let's get into the nitty gritty of getting your new website indexed quickly.

1. Plan, research, plan, research and plan some more!

What Is SEO - Free Ebook PDF Download
So you want to get your website indexed within 48 hours too, right? The most important thing I can tell you to do before you even think about publishing your website is to plan and do research. I will expound on some of these topics later in the post.
  1. Map out what your site will look like – literally draw out a rough sketch of your website. Design each page to your liking on paper, and then transfer that into building your website on the web. This will drastically reduce the amount of time you spend on hunting for a predesigned template or building your own template from scratch.
  2. Brush up on your SEO (search engine optimization) knowledge and gain a general understanding of how it works. Write down any useful information and keep it handy for when you go to publish your website.
  3. Scope out your competition and see how their website flows. While you do not want to copy work from your competition, you do want to learn from them so that you can avoid future mistakes.
  4. Research what you can do in order to promote your website quickly. For example, reading this article is an excellent place to start! Simple Google searches like "how to get your website indexed", "how to get traffic to your website" and "how to promote your website" will bring up plenty of content for you to digest.

2. Create at least 10 pieces of quality content ready to be published before you go live on the web.

I made sure that I had already written, proofread and edited my website content before I purchased my domain name and hosting. Because I had already mapped out the niche I wanted to enter, I prepared quality content that would be ready for publishing as soon as my website went live. This allowed me to gear up my website quickly and focus on designing the website rather than having to rush around to write "quality" content.

3. Add in your content and start building your internal link structure

I think this is a crucial mistake that far too many new webmasters commit. They research on how to get their website indexed quickly, how to promote their website, and how to get traffic to their website, but they forget to actually develop their website. Indexing, promotion and traffic are all wonderful bonuses, but the quality of your website must always be of first importance.
Depending on your website (you may own an informational website, a blog or a combination of both), create the necessary web pages that are needed for the site. For example, I created these pages right from the beginning: "Home", "Blog", "Articles", "Misc", "Contact" and "About". It is beneficial if you have already prepared the staple information (Contact, About, etc.) so that you can just toss the information in as soon as you publish your website.
Once you have created and edited your pages, begin the process of adding in your prewritten content and linking the pages to one another. Make sure that every page links to at least one other page in your website and that each individual page has at least one link pointing to it. This is vital for helping those spiders crawl and index the majority of the pages in your website. Make it easy on the spiders by thoroughly linking to your web pages. Make sure that your link structure flows logically – a.k.a., don't just randomly add links into your web pages. Make sure that each link is a cohesive fit and that each link will make surfing for your visitors (and the spiders) easier.

4. Optimize your content for keywords in your niche

Looking back at when I first started my website, I wish I would've researched more about how to optimize web pages. Use the Google Keyword Tool to analyze what people are searching for in your niche. Once you have found a few phrases that you think fit your website's content, start optimizing your pages by strategically placing those keywords throughout your content.
Don't overstuff your content with those keywords or the spiders will think your website is a bunch of spam. However, make sure you use those phrases (and variations of those phrases) enough to attract attention from the search engines. If it flows well, also make your anchor text (the text that appears for a hyperlink) mimic the keyword(s) highlight the keyword phrases you have chosen. This will help those search engine spiders understand what your content is all about and tell them how to rank it in the respective search engines.

5. Start submitting it to search engines and web directories

This is the point in which you will start receiving some attention from the web spiders. I first started out by submitting my website to the big three search engines: Google, Yahoo! and Bing. To make things easier on you, each of those terms is hyperlinked to the page that you need to access in order to submit your site to those search engines. Submit your main URL to each of these search engines to get started.
The next thing I would suggest that you do is sign up for Google Webmaster Tools. Once again, it is highlighted for your convenience (please note that you must create a Google account first before you can use their tools). I would also sign up for Bing Webmaster Tools (you must create a Hotmail account) while you are at it. Bing does take longer to index pages than Google, but it would be wise to go ahead and sign up for their tools anyways. Yahoo! also has their own type of webmaster tools for you to use.
After you have submitted your URL to the search engines and have signed up the for Webmaster tools, it is time to create a sitemap for your website. This allows the search engines to see and understand the link structure in your website and, more importantly, allows the spiders to crawl your website with more freedom and ease. You can easily create your own sitemap by clicking here and filling out the necessary information.
Now that you have done all that work (phew!), it is time to start submitting your website to some web directories. I will go ahead and warn you that there are myriads of directories out on the web, but not all of them are necessarily good. Below is a list of directories (both paid and free) that I would recommend for submitting your website.
Paid Directories
  1. InCrawler.com – they have a good directory that is not cluttered. It is a PR5 directory with a basic fee of $25. You may also choose to pay $50 for a premium listing if you so desire.
  2. JoeAnt.com – they have a wonderful directory that truly can bring traffic to your website. It is a PR6 directory with a onetime, non-refundable fee of $40. The only downside to this is that you are not guaranteed acceptance into the directory. If you are not accepted, you can always apply for an editor position and submit your website from there.
  3. BOTW.org – this is a huge directory that has clout with Google. It is a PR7 directory with two, non-refundable options: a $100/yr recurring fee or a onetime submission fee of $300. You are not guaranteed inclusion in the directory, so I would be cautious to submitting your site to this directory right off the bat.
Free Directories
  1. DMOZ.org – just submit your site to this PR8 directory anyways. The backlog is insane, so don't expect to get your site included anytime soon. However, I would go ahead and recommend that you submit your site to them. It has a lot of presence with Google (Google basically copies their directory).
  2. Tsection.com – this PR5 directory is excellent for free submission. It is laid out well and provides a good backlink for your website.
  3. LinkCentre.com– this PR3 directory is nice and they accept your site very quickly. The only drawback to this directory is that it is very full because of the automatic approval factor.
  4. SoMuch.com – this nice PR5 directory will review your site quickly for inclusion.

7. Submit your content to social media sites

Now that you have setup your website and submitted it to search engines and web directories, it is time to submit your content (that you have hopefully already created) to some social media sites. I would recommend that you submit your content to the following sites (as they get indexed quickly and/or produce large volumes of traffic): Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon. While there are other social media websites (feel free to submit your content to them too), I would first start out with these three.
Digg is crawled very frequently by search engine spiders, so you have an excellent chance of getting your content crawled once it is submitted. I have found that Reddit can bring good traffic to your website and that Reddit users tend to tweet about their newest findings (good advertising). StumbleUpon has the potential to bring tons of traffic to your website in a short amount of time, greatly increasing the chance that your site will get indexed quickly by the search engines.

8. Sit back, relax and watch while your site gets indexed

While I cannot 100% guarantee that this method of getting your website indexed quickly will work, I can say from personal experience that doing this got my own website, Forever Singing, indexed within 48 hours. And, because I took the time up front to do all this labor, my blog posts generally get crawled and indexed within 5 hours of me publishing them on the internet. Did I mention that I have only been at this whole website thing for 2 months? Many people can't even get their website indexed in two months, much less their newest content!
Using these steps above, I got my own website/blog indexed within 48 hours. Two months later, my website gets crawled at the very least every other day (if I don't make any new posts) and it is always crawled the same day I make a new post. Remember folks, I've only been at this for two months. Take time to follow the steps that I have provided for you, and you will start to see results in no time
