GestureWorks Gameplay adds customizable touch controls to any PC game

The GestureWorks Gameplay program allows any video game running on a Windows 8 device to be played with an on-screen touch controller

The computer interaction experts at Ideum have developed a number of impressive multi-touch smart tables in the past, such as the Platform 46 and the Pano Touch Table, many of which were built around their proprietary GestureWorks software. Now the company is gearing up to release its GestureWorks Gameplay program, which is built around the same engine and allows any video game running on a Windows 8 device o be played with an on-screen touch controller.
With GestureWorks Gameplay installed, players will be able to create their own virtual controllers for any game, which will show up as an overlay on the action. Using a simple tool, gamers can add an assortment of buttons, joysticks, D-pads, switches, and scroll wheels right onto the screen and build a full set of controls from scratch. From there, each item can be moved anywhere on the display and altered in terms of size, color, opacity and labeling to form a unique controller that's tailor-made for a specific title.

Once these controllers have been put together, users will be able to share them with other players through an online community and download any existing ones for a wide range of games. The touch control software even allows for two players to share the same screen and use their individual controllers on co-op games.

Besides adding digital buttons onto the screen, players can also program over 200 different gesture commands, swiping in front of a character to make them attack or tapping above them to trigger a jump, for instance.

Many PC gamers might balk at the idea of replacing a mouse and keyboard with an on-screen controller, but the addition of touch controls could make gaming on the go much easier, especially for people with a large backlog of titles to play. Some games that are less action-focused, like Trine, may actually benefit from them.

Currently, Ideum is allowing people to sign up for a beta of GestureWorks Gameplay through an official website. The beta will be released in October, with the full version of the software slated for November of this year.

In the meantime, you can watch the video below to see how GestureWorks Gameplay's touch controls perform on a number of modern games.

Motorola Droid MAXX Shipping Ahead of August 20th Release

Verizon’s new Motorola Droid MAXX, and presumably the Motorola Droid Ultra, have begun shipping to customers ahead of their August 20th release date.
Earlier this week, there was a bit of controversy over the release dates of the Motorola Droid MAXX and the Droid Ultra, two of Verizon’s new Droid smartphones from Motorola. While the devices were initially announced with an August 20th release date, the devices saw their ship by dates slip to August 27th online causing some to suspect a delay.

The Droid MAXX from Verizon is shipping out ahead of is August 20th release.

Verizon cleared the air, telling prospective buyers that the devices will still be available on August 20th in-stores but that those who pre-ordered after the change in the date won’t see their devices ship out until later on.
The good news is that those who pre-ordered these devices prior to the date change are apparently seeing their devices shipping out ahead of projected August 20th delivery dates. The screenshot below, sent to Gotta Be Mobile by a tipster, shows the Droid MAXX being picked up by FedEx just a few short hours ago.

The Droid MAXX is shipping out ahead of its August 20th release date.
The tipster tells us that the device is expected to arrive on August 20th, the same date that was given as a ship by date shortly after the devices went up for pre-order. At this point, we can only confirm that the Droid MAXX is shipping but we imagine that the Droid Ultra, the other device set for arrival on August 20th, is shipping as well. Motorola’s third Droid smartphone, the Droid Mini, isn’t set to arrive until August 29th.

The Droid Ultra and Droid MAXX are entering a crowded field as Verizon is set to carry the HTC One on August 22nd and release the Moto X just a few short days later. The carrier is also expected to get the iPhone 5S and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which are thought to be arriving in early September. Rumors have also suggested that the company will offer the rumored HTC One Max, a large screen version of the HTC One.

Verizon’s new Droids do have some likable features including high-resolution displays, speedy processors, solid cameras and durable designs. The Droid MAXX also features a massive battery that should offer consumes up to 48 hours in battery life, more than the Droid RAZR MAXX HD.

Users looking to pick up the first Motorola smartphone created with customizability in mind won’t have to wait too long, if there on the United States second-largest mobile carrier. Motorola’s Moto X will go on sale at local AT&T stores starting August 23rd.
According to a press release made available by the company just hours ago, users who purchase the device in AT&T’s retail store locations can expect both the “woven black” and “woven white” color options to be available on that day.
Each store will also have color samples available for users who would like to get a feel for each color hue before they use the Moto Maker website to create their own custom colored device. Users won’t be able to pick up a custom colored device in store, but AT&T and Motorola will ship each customized device to the user within four days.

Create a custom smartphone with the Moto Maker.

Whether users choose to customize the color of their Moto X or not, pricing will depend on on-board storage size. The Moto X on AT&T will come with 16GB of on-board storage for $199.99, 32GB of on-board storage for $249.99. That pricing is after the user signs up for a two-year service agreement. Those who wish to purchase the Moto X as part of the AT&T Next monthly payment system will be able to get the 16GB version of the device for $27 per month and the 32GB version of the Moto X for $32 per month.

For those who simply can’t wait, AT&T will allow a small amount of users to create their own custom designed Moto X and get it before the device goes on sale.

AT&T’s availability announcement comes mere hours after detailed customization features available to users through the Moto Maker website.
Through that website users can customize nearly everything about their device including button and body color options, accent button coloring and storage capacity. Uses can even specify what wallpaper and Google Account they’d like the device to arrive configured with.
The Moto X features a 4.7-inch HD display, LTE capabilities, 2GB of RAM a 10 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2 megapixel font-facing camera. Users won’t be able to customize the Motorola-made X8 processor inside the device.

Motorola has yet to detail when users on other networks will be able to pick up the Moto X, though it did say the device would come to users on Verizon and T-Mobile.

Google gives Motorola a striking new logo

Motorola's classic logo is put to rest, as the search giant creates a brand new design for its recent acquisition.
There are logo redesigns and there are logo redesigns. And this could reasonably be described as the mother of all redesigns.

Motorola is a company with a huge and emotive history behind it. Founded in Chicago in 1928, the company manufactured one of the first car radios, the first walkie-talkie, and a series of communications devices that were vital to Allied forces during the Second World War. The Cathode Ray tube it c0-developed became the TV industry standard; in 1969 Neil Armstrong said "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" from the Moon on a Motorola transceiver; and in 1973, Motorola demonstrated the first hand-held portable telephone.

Over more than half a century of technological innovation, Motorola devices have carried the same 'batwing' logo, created by award-winning Chicago graphic designer Morton Goldsholl in late 1954. Then in January 2011, the company split into two: Motorola Solutions, an enterprise- and government-facing wing, and Motorola Mobility, focusing on handsets and set-top boxes.

The latter was bought by Google in 2012 - and the search giant has now made it clear who's calling the shots with the new design.
Birth of a classicEarly versions of the Motorola brand logo

Although the brand name 'Motorola' was established in 1930 for its in-car radio, it wasn't until 1947 that the company, which was originally called the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation, took the same name. The logo originally leaned toward a handwritten, cursive look (above).

Then in 1954 when Morton Goldsholl, an award-winning Chicago graphic designer, proposed establishing a visually strong graphic mark. "It should capture the eye of all observers–consumer, dealer, salesman, casual onlooker, or the most prejudiced company employee… [and] it should have the visual strength to last," he said at the time. The brilliant 1954 design lasted for decades

The 'M' insignia was born (above). Designed in 1954 and released the following year, , it featured two aspiring triangle peaks arching into an abstracted 'M', and became known as the batwings.

Also referred to as the 'emsignia', this logo served the company for decades, with only minor variations. Then when the company was broken into two in 2011, the Motorola Mobility arm kept hold of the old logo, giving it a vibrant red twist. The 2011 logo added some vibrant colour to Motorola Mobility

Other than that, though, little changed - so Google's new take on the design is a shock to the system.
New look

The new design, revealed by The Verge, features a new, strikingly thinner font that seems well in line with the current trend for minimalist, flat design typified by the recent iOS7 makeover of the iPhone interface.

The much loved batwings remain, but the solid single-colour disk has been replaced by a 12-coloured outer ring, the letters are a softer grey and the whole feel to the design is much more in keeping with Google's own visual identity. And just to ram home the point, there's a new tagline: "A Google company".

Motorola Meeting with Media This Week, But Not for Moto X?

Rumors of a potential Moto X, Motorola’s new flagship smartphone that’s been hitting the rumor mill for somet time now, reignited when the Google-owned smartphone-maker had sent out media invitations for an event this week scheduled for July 10 and July 11. However, as it turns out, the event may not be for the introduction of the Moto X Android smartphoneafter all according to information that CNET had acquired.

The publication says that Motorola and Googlewill have other news to share, but didn’t speculate on what that news would be. “However, we’re told by a source that Motorola has something else to share with journalists,” Eric Mack of CNET wrote in a blog post. “No more details are yet forthcoming.”

In recent days, there have been more leaks of a Motorola Droid Ultra and Motorola Droid Maxx handsets, where both devices appear to be extensions of Motorola’s current Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR Maxx HD lines. Potentially, these devices could be officially shown off this week to members of the media.

Initially, Internet personality Leo Laporte said on his podcast that he had received a personal invitation from Motorola’s Guy Kawasaki for an event for this week.

Scopri come farti Rimborsare parte della spesa del prossimo Viaggio !He said we’d really like you to come down to the Google campus for an event — small group of journalists, 50 people, two groups; July 10th and July 11th… I’m thinking it’s the phone.

Tech observers who have been watching Motorola also noticed that the pre-order announcement for the Moto X shows a summer scene of two people where their bodies form an “X” and an “I” suggesting that this would be for the roman numeral 11 for the July 11 announcement.

The July event would also take place in the midst of several other tech events happening for the week. Also in the San Francisco Bay Area, VentureBeat is scheduled to hold its MobileBeat conference while in New York City on July 11, Nokia will be holding its event that’s widely believed to introduce a 41-megapixel PureView version of the Windows Phone 8 Lumia smartphone.

Historically, Motorola had introduced a number of new smartphones during the summer launch. The company had introduced the T-Mobile Motorola CLIQ smartphone, Motorola’s first Android smartphone with a sliding QWERTY keyboard, at Giga OM’s Mobilize a few years ago in the summer time frame and it has launched a number of Droid releases with U.S. partner Verizon Wireless, including the Droid X, in the summer.

If the Moto X doesn’t launch this summer, another potential date that it could debut would be this fall alongside the introduction of the next iteration of Google’s mobile OS, colloquially known as Key Lime Pie and rumored to be either called Android 5.0.
