Google Updates Play Magazines App with new Interface

google-playAndroid users who rely on the Google Play Store to get their fill of the latest editions of the favorite periodicals will be greeted by a new user interface the next time they open the application. The updated Google Play Magazines, which is available to download right now, includes a complete overhaul of the app’s user interface. The most notable change is a new side-bar that allows users to browse the content that’s stored on their device and what’s available in the Google Play Store more easily. For those users who felt that deciding what to read was too complicated, the updated application includes a streamlined Read Now, Library and Shopping areas. That change will mostly be welcome.

Google also maintains that version 2.0 of Google Play Magazines address some bugs that were associated with the last version of the application, however it doesn’t list any of them, so for now which ones were fixed remains a mystery.
So far user reviews on the changes have been mixed, with some users noting that while the new interface brings the applications more in line with other Google Android applications, while some say it still behaves strangely on some devices.
Other users also noted that today’s update didn’t add features that are readily available in other reader applications like the company’s own Google Play Books application, though how feasible that particular feature would be to implement in Google Play Magazines is questionable.
Google first debuted Google Play Magazines when it launched magazines in Google Play Store last June. At the time, its collection only consisted of publications from Conde’ Nast and Hearst.  Since then, the number of periodicals has ballooned and now includes thousands of magazines in categories ranging from automotive news to the latest celebrity news with editions of People Magazine.
Those who are already using Play Magazines should navigate to “My Apps” to get the updated application. Those who download the application to their Android devices for the first time will automatically get today’s update.
