Next iPhone chip will reportedly be made by Samsung

Samsung may be one of its greatest rivals, yet Apple is again turning to the South Korean organization to get chips made for the iphone, as per a report.

Samsung will make Apple's next chip, which will probably be known as the A9, in its freshest plants running on the 14-nanometer assembling methodology, as per a news report in Re/code, which refered to unacknowledged sources acquainted with the matter.

Apple plans its portable chips in-house, however gets them made through contract makers. Before, Apple has turned to Samsung for a large portion of its iphone chips, yet the latest A8 contribute the iphone 6 and iphone 6 Or more were made by TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Producing Co.).

Samsung will have the capacity to supply extensive volumes of low-power, rapid chips for the iphones and ipads. Apple preferences utilizing the most recent and most prominent advancements accessible, and Samsung's manufacturing plants would be a more propelled alternative than the offices gave by TSMC, which is experiencing difficulty transitioning to its 16-nanometer process.

The news could likewise close the entryway on gossipy tidbits that Apple will turn to Intel to make its versatile chips. Intel likewise utilizes the 14-nanometer procedure to make its chips, yet it has a head-begin over Samsung in 3d transistor stacking innovation, which gives the force proficiency and rate advantages seen in cell phones and tablets.

Samsung has said it anticipated that would begin revealing 14-nanometer chips in volume before a year ago's over. Samsung contributed 15.6 trillion Korean won (around $14 billion) all the more a year ago in new industrial facilities to make chips for cell phones and modern gear. Globalfoundries could likewise get included in assembling iphone chips as it has authorized Samsung's 14-nanometer process innovation for execution in industrial facilities.

The opposition in the middle of Apple and Samsung in the cell phone and tablet markets has been exceptional as well as quarrelsome: the organizations have sued one another. Apple's iphone 6 and iphone 6 Or more have been runaway victories, and Samsung wants to make enchantment with the Universe S6, which it may uncover at the Versatile World Congress in Barcelona one month from now.

We've been dreaming about self-driving cars for a while — but what what about self-parking cars?

Volvo Cars - Autonomous Parking Concept

Volvo Car Group has developed an ingenious concept for autonomous parking. The concept car finds and parks in an open space by itself, without the driver inside. The smart, driverless car also interacts safely and smoothly with other cars and pedestrians in the parking lot, just as you'd expect a Volvo to behave. Valet parking, reimagined.

According to a Volvo press release, the company's newest concept car will find a vacant space and park there — even without a driver. Its smart car can interact safely with other cars, pedestrians and curbs.

After the driver turns on the service using a mobile app, the vehicle uses sensors to find and navigate its way to a free parking space. When the driver gets back to his car, the process is reversed.

However, the service works only with parking spaces designed to be compatible with Vehicle 2 Infrastructure technology.

Car owners won't see this technology anytime soon. As Volvo Senior Safety Advisor Thomas Broberg explained on the Volvo blog, "technologies are still being developed. However, we will take the first steps towards our leadership aim by introducing the first features with autonomous steering in the all-new Volvo XC90, which will be revealed at the end of 2014."

Would you rather a self-driving car or a self-parking car? Let us know in the comments below.

Touchscreen interface for seamless data transfer between the real and virtual worlds

Deutsch: Logo von FujitsuDeutsch: Logo von Fujitsu (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
In a video presentation (above), we see how one can manipulate data on a piece of paper: by using finger gestures, you can copy an image or a text excerpt and store it into memory.
Besides flat surfaces, the technology also works on curved or uneven ones, so one can easily manipulate data from a book. Touchscreen interface 3
Though the technology is still at the "demonstration level," researchers at Fujitsu plan to develop a commercial version of the system by fiscal 2014.
Check out the video above and tell us how'd you use this technology in the comments.

We're quickly getting used to the fact that computer, smartphone and tablet screens are meant to be touched — but what about paper?
Fujitsu has developed a technology that detects objects your finger is touching in the real world, effectively turning any surface — a piece of paper, for example — into a touchscreen, DigInfo reports.

"This system doesn't use any special hardware; it consists of just a device like an ordinary webcam, plus a commercial projector. Its capabilities are achieved by image processing technology," explains Taichi Murase, a researcher at Fujitsu's Media Service System Lab.

Touchscreen T-Shirts Only a Few Years Away

Most people have to keep their smart phones within reach. But what if instead of having your technology an arm’s length away, it was actually on your arm? Imagine clothing with touchscreen capabilities built right into the fabric — a truly "wearable" technology.
Under Armour is working on it as we speak, but the technology isn't quite there... yet.
Earlier this week, Under Armour officially unveiled Armour39, its next generation of wearable technology. Armour39 is an athletic performance monitoring system that measures "what matters most: WILLpower." WILLpower is Under Armour’s proprietary measurement for how hard an athlete pushes him or herself during a workout on a scale of 1-10, taking into account heart rate, calories burned and past performances, among other things.
In its attempt to challenge the Nike FuelBand and other performance monitors, the Armour39 system will track basic performance measurements like speed, intensity, heart rate, calories burned, a log of past performances and other athletic metrics.
The system does this with the use of a chest strap that contains an Under Armour "bug" and heart monitor that capture all the information. The bug can then be used in conjunction with the Armour39 watch, or with the use of an iOS app for iPhones to provide easy access to the data.
Unfortunately, the Armour39 performance monitor does not contain a GPS element for proper run tracking. In today’s market, this seems like a major product flaw that affects runners, who are presumably a large section of their target. This does, however, allow the device to run for nearly a year on the watch battery used in the device. But the use of a battery instead of a rechargeable component could be another consumer deterrent.
In promotion for the new Armour39 system, Under Armour has released a commercial called “I Will” that seems to suggest a greater shift towards wearable technology. The video first focuses on the Armour39 system and chest strap, but transitions to a future concept suit that has touchscreen capabilities built directly into the fabric.
The messaging in the video above makes it seem that Under Armour is currently working on such a suit and not just promoting it as a concept.

Apple’s iPad inspires new transparent concept

Apple’s iPad inspires new transparent concept
Of course there are a host of technological challenges to contend with before concepts like this become reality, but does anyone really doubt these types of products are in our future?

Digital artist Ricardo Afonso sees the iPad evolving its clean profile into something even cleaner. So clean, it is clear. Such a form factor lends itself to fitting into any occasion or any décor. Afonso did not get too flamboyant with his concept, knowing that it will be some time before we break the barriers of size for micro circuits, processors, and batteries as well as most material’s rather inconvenient insistence on being opaque in nature.

The concept also lends itself to how such products might be styled. There is only so much you can do with a slab of glass, so trim becomes the accent for people to notice. The top and bottom treatments allow for form and function. Add a few different colors and the rest is up to what can be done with the panel and display.

Afonso makes his CGI talent perform a virtual tour (video below) of what could lie ahead for the iPad, or any handheld device for that matter. You will notice that he kept the familiar iOS appearance so that anyone could recognize it for what it is, but we certainly hope that by the time such technology is viable, iOS will have undergone a healthy revision in its user experience, perhaps more than once.

Acer Aspire M5 Ultrabooks Launch with Touch and Windows 8

The Acer Aspire M5 Ultrabook line of notebooks with Windows 8 and an optional 10-finger multi-touch display launches on October 26th as a Best Buy exclusive.
The Aspire M5 Ultrabook comes in two models, a 14-inch version with the 10-finger touch and the 15-inch M5 with a 15.6-inch display and no touch screen option. The launch of these new notebooks lines up with the consumer release of Windows 8 later this month, when consumers can expect to see an avalanche of Windows 8 notebooks, tablets and Windows RT tablets.
Acer Aspire M5 with Windows 8 and 14-inch touch screen.
Windows 8 relies on touch and gestures, and 14-inch touchscreen on the Aspire M5-481PT is ready to take advantage of the new users interface without asking users to give up a reasonably sized display. The M5 does not fold around like the Yoga 13, so users will need to reach out to the display, something Intel researchers say consumers are quick to embrace.
The Aspire M5 M5-581T upsizes to a 15.6-inch display, but drops the touch screen option. This model is $100 less, but the lack of touch is a possible turn off once users see and interact with Windows 8.
Intel Core i 3rd generation processor power both of these notebooks along with a hybrid hard drive that offers 500GB of storage and a 20GB SSD to speed up booting and system applications. The M5 notebooks include two USB 3.0 ports, a HDMI connection, a backlit keyboard, Dolby Home Theater v4 and a DVD drive.

Profile of the 14-inch Acer Aspire M5.
Acer claims both of these notebooks can last all day with 8-hour battery life, but users should expect lower numbers with typical use. The 14-inch M5 weighs 4.6 pounds and the 15.6-inch models tops 5 pounds  pushing the limits of what most consumers consider an Ultrabook.
The Acer Aspire M5 Ultrabooks arrive in Best Buy on October 26th. The 14-inch Aspire M5-481PT, with 10-finger multi-touch support retails for $799 and the larger screen, Aspire M5-581T starts at $699.
Acer also plans to launch the Aspire V5 notebooks later this month with 11.6-inch, 14-inch and 15.6-inch models. The larger models will offer touch screens as an option. The Aspire V5 with touch starts at $749, and starts at $499 without touch.

  • Touchy Subject: Touchscreens on Laptops

Research findings challenge the conventional wisdom about PC touchscreens.
Consumer tests reveal users want single device with a keyboard that opens, closes and is touch enabled.
In user experience testing conducted by Intel, researchers observed people tilting back the laptop screen and using their thumbs to touch both sides of the screen, similar to how people hold a tablet or smartphone. (Flickr photo)
Recent user testing shows that people want touch as part of their laptop computing experience. These research findings from Intel counter longstanding notions about touch-enabled displays on clamshell computers.
Touch on vertical screens, such as laptops, has been thought to result in so-called “gorilla arm,” a term engineers have coined to describe what happens when people use touch interfaces for lengthy periods.
“Touchscreen on the display is ergonomically terrible for longer interactions,” Avi Greengart of Current Analysis said to Wired in 2010. In user testing conducted by Intel in Brazil, China, Italy and the United States, however, people embraced touch on laptop displays.
“People told me that touch on the laptop was intuitive, fun, immersive and freed them from the mouse and trackpad, especially when they discovered actions like flicking the screen to scroll up or down and navigate between tasks,” said Daria Loi, a user experience manager at Intel.
In testing Loi found that people spent 77 percent of the time touching the laptop screen while running through a variety of tasks such as surfing the Web, watching online video, viewing and editing photos and adjusting the laptop’s setting.
“Many people found touch on a laptop screen intuitive,” she said.
For tests with consumers, Loi used an off-the-shelf touchscreen laptop running a simulated Windows 8 Metro-style operating system and applications such as PowerPoint. Although the prototype was not fully optimized with a touch operating system, many users said the touch experience transformed the notebook from a work to a play device.
“One person even compared the addition of touch as like having a laptop with an extra gear,” she said.
Loi says that the study results debunked another industry concern. “Many thought that hinges holding screens in place wouldn’t withstand the forcible pokes and pinches for very long,” she said. “But we saw people very gently touching, even caressing the screen.”
In her testing, she observed people tilting back the laptop screen and using their thumbs to touch both sides of the screen, similar to how people hold a tablet or smartphone. She also noticed a range of additional informal postures, such as resting one elbow on the table or armrest while touching the screen with the other hand or fluidly switching between right and left hand to navigate via touch.
Loi said that participants strongly expressed that they did not want the keyboard to go away. “Many gave practical or emotional reasons for liking the physical keyboard, such as the way it feels or sounds when pressing down on the different keys. Most participants did not like interacting with the virtual keyboard, even when touch was their favorite input modality.”
Strong Desires, High Expectations for Touch
Multi-touch screens are prevalent today on tablet and smartphone devices, and they’re even available on desktop computers. But Loi said that with the advent of Windows 8, Microsoft’s touch-optimized operating system, she wanted to know if people really did or did not want touch on their laptop.
Loi noted that in her testing people didn’t see touch on a vertical surface as a challenge or novelty. “Instead,” she said, “they described touch as something that enriched their experience, and something they believed would inevitably come to laptops.”
To participants who said they’d like to have touch and the keyboard on one device, Loi asked if they would consider replacing their laptop with a powerful tablet and wireless keyboard. “People said, ‘no way, the tablet has its purpose but I still need a laptop. I just want you to add touch,’” Loi said.
Daria Loi uses an Intel reference design Ultrabook with multi-touchscreen functionality. Loi conducted user tests and found that people spent 77 percent of the time touching the laptop screen while running through a variety of tasks such as surfing the Web, watching online video, viewing and editing photos and adjusting the laptop’s setting. (Flickr photo)
Testing occurred before Loi’s team revealed the first touchscreen Ultrabook systems this year at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and CeBIT in Germany.
“While Windows 8 will help convince consumers to buy a touch-enabled laptop, it will come down to software and apps that use touch in a real way — a way that feels natural and simplifies the interaction,” said Josh Smith, a reviewer at Notebooks.com.
Hundreds of millions of people have become accustomed to responsive touch experiences they’re getting on smartphones and tablets. Smith said this has created high expectations for fast and smooth experiences on any touchscreen device. He points to recent Microsoft research aimed at improving average touchscreen reaction time of a 100-millisecond delay down to 1 millisecond over the next decade.
“I think that once this delay issue is overcome, we will see a better user experience and faster adoption,” Smith said.
“If I did this study 8 or 10 years ago, I don’t think I’d get the same results,” Loi said. “In the past few years, people have been exposed to touch through new personal devices and public interactions with ATMs or airport check-in machines. Overall, touchscreens are increasingly becoming smoother and more responsive than ever before. The user interfaces are now optimized for touch.”

Asus Eee Pad MeMO ME370T confirmed with quad-core Tegra 3, for $249

We got our hands on the Asus Eee Pad MeMO ME370T earlier today, and Nvidia just confirmed its price and chipset: the 7-inch Android tablet sports a 1280 x 800 resolution and a quad-core Tegra 3 SoC (not a Qualcomm SoC as previously thought). The best part? It'll only set you back $249. Flustered with the original Transformer Prime you just purchased? We'd advise you to have a seat. ASUS just took the wraps off an all new Transformer Prime (the TF700T) here at CES, which is presumably designed to rival Acer's newly-announced Iconia Tab A700. Notably, this guy won't be an outright replacement for the existing TF201 model; it's simply an upmarket alternative for those tired of the same specs over and over again. Speaking of, let's dive under the hood of this one, shall we? It's a 10.1-incher with NVIDIA's Tegra 3 within (1.3GHz quad-core Cortex A9), a Super IPS+ / Gorilla Glass 10.1-inch display with a downright silly 1,920 x 1,200 resolution (watch out, Lenovo!) and 32GB or 64GB of internal storage space. There's also an 8 megapixel rear camera / 2 megapixel front-facing cam, support for 1080p playback, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a micro-HDMI port, microSD card reader, a 25WHr Lithium-Polymer battery and a chassis that weighs just over a pound. It'll ship with Android 4.0.1 onboard (yeah, that's Ice Cream Sandwich), and will be compatible with the exact same keyboard dock as the existing Prime. Needless to say, ASUS is aiming for the stars with a build sheet like this, and the $599 to $699 retail price points enable you to know it. It'll land next quarter here in North America, and no, there's no GPS functionality listed on the spec sheet after the break; though we've been informed that this new Prime will come with a new back panel design (pictured after the break) that should enhance WiFi, BT and GPS performance. Moving onto more diminutive offerings, the Eee Pad MeMO (ME171) that we saw months ago is getting a formal reveal here in Las Vegas, boasting a 7-inch WXGA (1,280 x 800) IPS capacitive touchpanel, a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm 8260 processor, a gigabyte of memory, 16GB / 32GB of storage, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a 1.2 megapixel front / 5 megapixel rear camera (with 1080p recording), an A-GPS sensor, gyroscope, proximity sensor and a micro-USB port. There's a 4,400mAh Li-polymer battery reportedly good for some 8.5 hours of video playback, and it'll be Android 4.0.1 running the show. The unit checks in with dimensions of 7.8- x 4.6- x 0.50-inches (and a weight of 14.2 ounces), and while mum's the word on price (sadly), it'll supposedly ship in Q2 to North American adobes. keep up with the newest technologies and contemplate about how these will be used in the future. Motorola Droid RAZR Arrives in New Colors with Cheaper Price

A couple of days ago, Verizon launched a new cheaper version of the Motorola Droid RAZR. The new model checks in at $199 with a new two-year contract. It also comes with 16GB of on board storage. Sorry, no microSD card included in this deal. Until today though, the only color available was black. Starting today though, the 16GB Droid RAZR now comes in both purple and white flavors.

Both the purple and white models of the Droid RAZR are exactly the same as the device that we reviewed, and loved, back in October. They just come with a price tag that’s $100 lower.

Taking the place at the $299 price point will be the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX which still doesn’t have an official release date but is rumored to be launching on January 26th.

Droid RAZR

Verizon likes to announce these kinds of things at the last minute.

The Droid RAZR MAXX, if you’re unfamiliar, is going to come with a massive 3,300 mAh battery which will allow for owners 21 hours of continuous talk time. It’ll also be a tad thicker than the original Droid RAZR.

As for the specifications of the RAZR that was released today, for $199 you’ll be getting:

  • CPU: 1.2-GHz TI OMAP 4330
  • RAM: 1GB
  • Internal Storage: 16GB
  • Display: 4.3-inch, qHD 960 x 540 resolution
  • Cameras: Rear – 8MP; Front – 1.3MP
  • Battery: 1780 mAh battery

We should also mention that it comes with 4G LTE capabilities which means that you’ll be able to utilize data speeds that are up to 10 times faster than 3G.

Not bad for a $200 smartphone.

Analysts Predict Apple Sold 33 Million iPhones, 14 Million iPads in Q1 2012

Apple will announce the results of the company’s first quarter of 2012 tomorrow afternoon right as the stock market closes on the East coast.

This is an important quarter for Apple (AAPL) as it marks several firsts. This is the first quarter without Steve Jobs at the helm in some capacity, the first quarter of iPhone 4S sales and the first time that the company has offered an iPhone for free.

Investors are also curious to see how the company performs given Apple had lower than expected iPhone sales in last quarter of 2011.

We won’t have the final numbers for another day, but analysts have been freely sharing predictions of Apple’s first quarter performance. Fortune has rounded up a collection of Apple whisper numbers, coming up with an interesting collection estimates for Apple’s performance.

The most interesting Apple whisper numbers are the number of devices sold and the high gross margin estimate for Apple’s first quarter. Check out the best guess based on an average of six analyst numbers.

Grand Central Apple StoreEstimated Apple (AAPL) Q1 2012 Performance:

  • iPhones Sold – 33.02 Million
  • iPods Sold – 15.47 Million
  • iPads Sold – 14.26 Million
  • Gross Margin – 42.4%

If these numbers are true, Investors will be happy to see that Apple sold over 30 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2012. The iPad would mark a 4 million iPad increase over last quarter, good news considering the increased competition of low-cost tablets like the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet. Perhaps the most surprising increase in sales is the 15 million iPods sold in the first quarter, which is almost 10 million more than the final quarter of 2011.

The really exciting number for those of you who want to know how well the company is doing is the high gross margin, which is expected to arrive around 42%. This is nearly double that of Dell, HP and Amazon. You can see past performance of Gross margin in the chart below.
