Flexible OLED 3DTV From Samsung Wraps Around Walls Or Anything, Really



We already know about the amazing curved
displays both Samsung and LG are working on, using advanced OLED technology. LG seems to have won this fight, as they have already released theircurved OLED TV set in South Korea, with plans to hit the U.S. market soon.


But Samsung wants to take the idea of curved TVs even further by creating a television set with aflexible display that will actually be able to bend ant twist itself at the click of a remote. The idea is described in a recent patent application from Samsung.
The patent describes a thin high definition TV set equipped with an extra-flexible display that can be bent via remote control. This would allow users to get the perfect angle, no matter where they are in their room.  The TV’s movements would be controlled by what the Samsung patent application describes as a panel deformation member placed on the back of the display.
Also via the remote controller, users will be able to adjust the images on screen if they are distorted when the flexible display is bent to accommodate other viewing angles. The future Samsung flexible TV model will also allow owners to rotate or bend the entire display or just part of the screen.

The remote control will communicate the commands – rotating angle, direction, bending degree, etc. -, via Bluetooth of infrared communication. The controller will look more or less like a standard remote with menus, keys and buttons which will allow users to customize the television set’s bending degree, direction and angle.
Until now, flexible display technology has been mainly mentioned in relation to smartphones rather than TVs. But it seems the concept is picking up and a growing number of electronics powerhouses are trying it out. So even if we don’t know when Samsung’s flexible TV could actually be ready for commercialization, our guess is that it will happen pretty soon, given the stern competition in the market of flexible displays gadgets, whether it’s TVs or smartphones.

New Apple Patent Application Describes Flexible iWatch

A patent application from Apple outlines a device with a flexible screen worn on your wrist, adding fuel to the recent iWatch rumors.
The patent application describes a "wearable accessory device" which "includes a flexible display coupled to a bi-stable spring."
If that sounds vague, Apple was kind enough to explain that it's actually talking about a "slap wrap" type of bracelet.
While not exactly a wristwatch, the bracelet could show all sorts of info on its flexible screen — including that of the temporal variety — but Apple also has a couple of novelty ideas for the device.
These include a "a sensor for detecting a change between the flat state and the curled state of the bi-stable spring substrate," a "kinetic energy gathering component" as well as "recharging a battery housed within the accessory device by way of a plurality of ambient light energy collectors disposed across a portion of one surface of the accessory device."
All in all, we're looking at a very exciting gadget; however, the way from a patent application to an actual product is long and thorny, and we can't say for sure when (if ever) such a device might actually be on sale in Apple stores.

Nokia Shows Off Flexible Mobile Device of the Future





Look what Nokia has done with this mobile gadget — Nokia calls it a “kinetic device,” a prototype with a flexible display the company showed at Nokia World 2011 in London.
Instead of the pinch-to-zoom capabilities copied throughout the smartphone industry, Nokia has come up with a novel way to accomplish the same thing: When you bend and twist this handset, the image on its screen does your bidding in a highly intuitive way.
One of the advantages Nokia touts for such a device is the ability to use it without looking at it — for instance, twisting it in your pocket to dismiss a call or change song on a music player.
How does it work? According to CNET, a Nokia demonstrator said the company was experimenting with bundles of carbon nanotubes whose electrical properties change when they’re stretched. Those nanotubes are embedded in a flexible substance that allows the device to control the screen when twisted and bent. An additional advantage: The device is much tougher — and is water resistant, too.

Imagine the possibilities: Perhaps it could be used by blind people, where the bending properties of the device would not require vision to intuitively control a smartphone.
When will we see such a thing in the real world? Nokia’s not saying precisely when its kinetic device will be released, but one rep tells IntoMobile in the video embedded below, “hopefully soon.”
