HP Thinks Giant Tablets Are a Good Idea

2006 Rove Live logo2006 Rove Live logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Why Rove? Because it can do exactly that — the 20-inch display is fully portable with almost 4 hours of battery life. Although its mobility, along with the 10-finger multi-touch display, technically makes it a tablet, it's really better thought of as an all-in-one PC that you can move from room to room when you need to.
Much like the Tap 20 and Lenovo's IdeaCenter

Horizon, the Rove has a special hinge that lets you use it in many different ways. Stood up at a high angle, it's great as a normal all-in-one or even an "easel" for a painting app. At a low angle, it's more suited for drafting. The hinge is made so you can easily adjust the angle with one hand.
It really shines when it's laid flat, though, since it becomes a virtual game board for any number of gaming apps. Many come pre-installed, including Monopoly, Fingertaps Jigsaw Wars and Musical Instruments, and Disney Fairies.
The in-plane switching (IPS) LCD will help with off-angle viewing from various players during gameplay. And if the accelerometer does anything weird, HP wisely provides a manual rotation button that puts you back in control of the screen.
The Rove 20 won't be available until July, partly because it's waiting on Intel's latest Core processors, the fourth-generation "Haswell" chips. Those are expected to officially arrive in the next month. The Rove will use as lower-power chip meant for Ultrabooks and hybrids along with Intel's integrated HD graphics.
The Rove packs 1TB of storage as well as an 8GB solid-state drive for faster response time. It's also includes the latest and greatest Wi-Fi (802.11ac) and WiDi for use as a wireless display from another device such as a phone or tablet.
Price isn't final yet, but HP says it'll be in the neighborhood of $1,000.
How do you like the Rove 20 and the new breed of Windows 8 supertablets/mobile all-in-ones? Let us know in the comments.

Android Falling Out of LG’s Favor On TV?

It looks like LG, which had been a Google TV partner bringing the search giant’s mobile OS to its big HDTV screens, is now looking to switch allegiance and is favoring the Open webOS platform, which was born out of HP open-sourcing webOS post-Palm acquisition.
Though webOS, which had debuted on the Palm Pre as a contender against Apple’s iPhone but was later eclipse by the popularity of Android as another challenger, was designed for smartphones, it looks like the scalable platform can be adopted for other users. Android itself has been touted as a scalable architecture that can be adapted for phones, TVs, appliances, cars, and other uses.

In order for Open webOS to work–and for LG to be successful in the smart TV segment–apps and widgets would need to be ported to the platform, such as Netflix, Pandora, YouTube, and Vudu to name a few. According to reporting by webOS Nation, porting has already begun for these apps.
One area that still needs to be addressed is said to be boot speed. webOS does take a while to boot up, and it’s been rumored that LG may take a smartphone-like approach to televisions by leaving the computer engine running, but allowing the users to turn off the screen, much like how sleep mode works on a phone.
Manufacturers like LG have been known to pursue multiple approaches to a project like this, and Open webOS was one of three separate avenues they had been considering. That said, HP signed an agreement with LG in June around this project. LG’s also had multiple engineers sent to Sunnyvale to work with HP’s webOS engineers. They’ve also sent multiple LG L9 motherboards (L9 being LG’s dual core chipset made specifically for their smart televisions).
LG is said to be aiming for a CES 2013 debut of the new Open webOS smart TV.
In other smart TV news, Samsung will begin incorporating Amazon’s video on demand service on its 2012 lineup. Those sets run Samsung’s proprietary Samsung smart TV architecture and not the Android-based Google TV platform.
Though LG may be switching directions on televisions, the company appears to be fully committed to Android. For the debut of Android 4.2 Key Lime Pie, it’s been widely rumored that LG will be partnering with Google to deliver the Google-branded Nexus 4 smartphone.

Analysts Predict Apple Sold 33 Million iPhones, 14 Million iPads in Q1 2012

Apple will announce the results of the company’s first quarter of 2012 tomorrow afternoon right as the stock market closes on the East coast.

This is an important quarter for Apple (AAPL) as it marks several firsts. This is the first quarter without Steve Jobs at the helm in some capacity, the first quarter of iPhone 4S sales and the first time that the company has offered an iPhone for free.

Investors are also curious to see how the company performs given Apple had lower than expected iPhone sales in last quarter of 2011.

We won’t have the final numbers for another day, but analysts have been freely sharing predictions of Apple’s first quarter performance. Fortune has rounded up a collection of Apple whisper numbers, coming up with an interesting collection estimates for Apple’s performance.

The most interesting Apple whisper numbers are the number of devices sold and the high gross margin estimate for Apple’s first quarter. Check out the best guess based on an average of six analyst numbers.

Grand Central Apple StoreEstimated Apple (AAPL) Q1 2012 Performance:

  • iPhones Sold – 33.02 Million
  • iPods Sold – 15.47 Million
  • iPads Sold – 14.26 Million
  • Gross Margin – 42.4%

If these numbers are true, Investors will be happy to see that Apple sold over 30 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2012. The iPad would mark a 4 million iPad increase over last quarter, good news considering the increased competition of low-cost tablets like the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet. Perhaps the most surprising increase in sales is the 15 million iPods sold in the first quarter, which is almost 10 million more than the final quarter of 2011.

The really exciting number for those of you who want to know how well the company is doing is the high gross margin, which is expected to arrive around 42%. This is nearly double that of Dell, HP and Amazon. You can see past performance of Gross margin in the chart below.

Future of WebOS: HP Decision Expected in Two Weeks

After a disastrous wireless turn from HP that culminated last week with HP taking a charge of $1.66 billion to wind down its webOS mobile platform operation, HP’s CEO, Meg Whitman, has finally put a date on when the company will announce the fate of webOS: in the next two weeks.
That is according to an interview that she has given to the French newspaper Le Figaro (via TNW), in which she also notes that there are about 600 people left working in webOS, which further complicates its fate.
WebOS has been hanging in the air for months now, after HP abruptly announced this summer that it would discontinue making smartphones and other devices using the OS—just weeks after it had launched its first tablet, the TouchPad.
Since then, there have been rumors of potential buyers (including Amazon and Oracle); and even the thought that HP might hang on to the OS itself. After all, it already made one spectacular u-turn when it decided to hold on to its PC business, after former CEO Leo Apotheker had said the plan was to get rid of it.
Last month, it looked like HP was finally ready to spill the beans on what would happen with the platform business—with Whitman calling an all-hands meeting with staff in the division—but ultimately there was no news. Either that, or whatever news she hoped to deliver still hadn’t been finalized, because nothing came of that meeting.
The webOS platform held a lot of promise when it was first unveiled by Palm (which HP bought only last April for $1.2 billion). Its many supporters believed it provided an effective and engaging counterbalance to the trailblazing power that Apple and Google wield in the world of smarpthones and tablets. But today, with an almost negligible market share, it will take a lot of enterprise, attention, and investment if anyone hopes to get webOS up to speed again
