Microsoft Declares Victory Over BlackBerry In Battle for Third Place

According to Microsoft, its Windows Phone platform is now the defacto third smartphone ecosystem behind Apple and Google.
Windows_Phone_8_wedding_ad

In a conversation with The Verge during this week’s BUILD 2013 developer conference in San Francisco, Senior Windows Phone product manager Larry Lieberman told the publication that “we [Microsoft] think we’re solidly the third ecosystem right now.” Though that’s not totally good news – recent statistics have shown that Microsoft is behind Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android by a pretty wide margin, it’s great news for Microsoft as it puts the firm ahead of BlackBerry’s latest mobile efforts.

Microsoft saw their mindshare and marketshare in the smartphone space plummet after failing to deliver a modern version of Windows Mobile and for taking a year following Windows Mobile 6.5 to launch the full on redesign of the Windows Phone.

It’s believed that smartphone market can likely only support a small stable of viable mobile platforms. If Windows Phone is third, it could help Microsoft attract more developers. Having more developers create quality applications could potentially attract more users, making it even less likely that users or developers would move to support the BlackBerry 10 operating system.

Windows Phone’s launch in 2010 could have made all the difference. After repeatedly delaying the launch of BlackBerry 10, the operating system finally became available to consumers on the BlackBerry Z10 earlier this year. While the company has had some success with attracting developers to the platform, there have been no indications that sales of the Blackberry Q10 andBlackBerry Z10 have been anything other than lukewarm.

While the company seems to believe that it has little to worry about from BlackBerry itself, Microsoft’s relatively demure announcements about possible Windows Phone 8 updates could erode the consumer trust Microsoft has managed to gain so far.

Since Microsoft’s hardware partners shipped Windows Phone 8 last November, Apple and Google have each announced large changes to their mobile operating systems. Meanwhile, Microsoft has only made mention of one upcoming update to Windows Phone 8: GDR2.

Its large changes are limited to expanding the amount of networks that support letting users track their data usage with the DataSense app, and re-enabling the FM Radio support that the company dropped in the transition from Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 8.

Microsoft BUILD 2013: What To Expect

When Microsoft first announced that it would scrap its MIX internet develop conference and hardware focused WINHEC conference to create BUILD, the stakes couldn’t have been lower. Having grown accustomed to the unceremonious nature of Microsoft press events and conferences, users of the company’s products could barely understand why the company would create a new conference, mashing up more of things they didn’t care about.
Then at the first BUILD conference held in Anaheim, California the company dropped the bombshell that was Windows 8, announcing to the world that it would no longer sit idly by and watch other companies eat away at its core businesses without a fight. At that event, the company unveiled its first Developer Preview for Windows 8 and handed out free Samsung tablets to attendees.
build_2013
Just after the widespread availability of Windows 8, the company held its second Microsoft BUILD conference, this time showing off the new ways developers could harness Windows Phone and Windows 8 to create similar experiences with the same code. At the conference Microsoft’s message was clear, they wanted to tell developers and the Microsoft enthusiast community why developing for their products was easier than other platforms, a message that it would continue to push as it tried to shore up it’s application stores for both platforms.
Since the company began holding BUILD, it’s moved to quiet its PR message. Instead of spending years talking about new products that users may or may not ever see, the company now seems to be perfectly content with keeping users and developers in the dark about what could be coming down the pike. All told, it’s a more Apple like approach and in that vein BUILD is now one of the few times a year when Microsoft is encouraged — no required to put on a spectacle like Apple’s WWDCand Google I/O.
With those expectations and the relatively young nature of Windows 8 as a backdrop, users could expect a slew of announcements from the company over the entire range of its products.

Windows 8.1 for all

Microsoft has already announced that it will provide users with a preview of the Windows 8.1 update that it expects to ship this fall. As per the past two BUILD conferences, Microsoft will make that preview available to all attendees as well as those at home who are interested. In that build, Microsoft will return some form of the Start Menu back to users and add a new layer of customization to the stark, drab motif that’s dogged Windows 8 so far.

Windows Phone

While Google might not have chosen to talk more about its next version of Android at its event, Apple did and Microsoft will need to as well. If it doesn’t, the company faces the same criticism that’s dogged its mobile phone operating system for years now: that the company moves too slow and simply can’t compete in a market with two incumbent operating systems.
htc-windows-phone-8x-par-htc-1
If the company does discuss future versions of Windows Phone I’d expect it to be along the lines of how much more closely the company is moving to make Windows Phone and Windows closer. From a developer perspective that could mean even less coding changes than they have to make today to get apps working on both platforms. As Microsoft is aggressively moving to sync features across Windows 8 devices using its SkyDrive service, expect to hear more about how SkyDrive makes Windows Phone unique. Windows 8.1’s version of Internet Explorer already has a setting that allows it to send website URLs to Windows Phone devices.

Xbox for All

While the coming out party for the Xbox One this past May was hugely successful, the company’s efforts at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo utterly destroyed most of the goodwill customers had for the console due to its requirement that the console be connected to the internet at least once every day. Especially since the requirement is being put in place so that it can silently check to make sure users still own their games. Coming so soon after that debacle, Microsoft will have to assure developers that they aren’t throwing good money after bad by investing in games for their console.
Xbox_One
As this is the first new generation of the Xbox console to be developed under what some call Microsoft’s “Windows Anywhere” approach to computing, expect to hear even more about how the Xbox One builds on the foundation of Windows. We’d bet those streaming the event at home will also be in for a few tales of how making games for Xbox One means they can create titles for Microsoft’s Xbox on Windows platform as easily as well.

Surface

With the transition from being a software company to creating software, services and devices, Microsoft will need to continue to showcase its hardware chops and deliver more hardware, specifically tablets. This year’s BUILD kicks off just a week after the one-year anniversary of the Surface line of tablets. While not set it stone, between the packaged deals it’s offering consumers and the completely theft-like pricing that it’s offering educational institutions, Microsoft has to be gearing up for an announcement about its next generation hardware.  Rumors had pegged that the company is planning on announcing a 7-inch Surface tablet device.
Surface
What is nearly cast in stone is the absolute afterthought that Windows RT is currently in the marketplace. Microsoft will have to explain to developers and consumers alike about why they should give a care about Windows RT, an operating system that comes with great battery gains at the price of backwards compatibility.
Microsoft will kick off its BUILD keynote on June 26th at 9:00am Pacific Standard Time.GottaBeMobile will be in the audience and online, bringing users all the day’s top announcements.

Nokia prior to two years went through a big modification, saying goodbye to its traditional Symbian routes and shifting to MS’ Windows Phone OS. In that time where it moved towards top-notch segment, the Finnish firm also revealed a straightforward reserve OS that is named Asha, which created different types of low-ranged phones. Build to cater developing markets in needy nations, the Asha phones till time has shown a retail win. However, it was assumed that Asha would serve as emergency solution –Nokia’s mentioned aim is to trim down the price of Windows phone devices, and majorly cost-competitive phones like Lumia 520 and 610.
Asha may still be intervened by Windows Phone for some period, but still it showed a great hit with its Asha platform. The older software is changed and improved so that it commits “faster and more responsive” user experience in combination of improved development tools for app development, publishing and monetization.

Still that model of goals may be typical for any mobile OS, the reality Nokia is putting heavy resources into developing Asha ecosphere is speaking. The mobile maker doesn’t look like trusting its potential of shifting Windows Phone down the pricing level rapidly enough, and so it’s doing tricky jobs against expected competition by aligning Asha ranges.
The fresh UI in Asha owns many well-recognized features from the MeeGo-enabled Harmattan interface on the Nokia N9. Initial one is the capability to tap dually on the locked screen to wake the phone up, but components of the Swipe UI and the appealing style and the status of the N9 are also there.

iPhone 5 is Easy to Break, Expensive to Repair

Despite a stronger design, the iPhone 5 is easy to scratch or break when dropped, and iPhone repair costs are skyrocketing thanks to expensive parts and shortages.
That’s according to a new report fromMarketWatchwhich examined the prices of the components that users are most likely to break.
It’s asserted by the publication that Apple attempts to keep the price of replacement components high so that third-party services can’t repair the iPhone 5 for cheaper than what Apple charges for screen replacements.
broken iPhone curved and warped
Apple currently charges users as much $229 to replace the display of the iPhone 5, though users who pay for Apple’s AppleCare service can have their screens replaced for $49. AppleCare currently costs $99. In addition to ruining the quality of video playback, shattered iPhone displays could result in a device that’s simply not even remotely useable.
Users aren’t able to turn to third-party vendors to cheaply replace their device’s screen either. According to ComputerOverhauls.com, who spoke to MarketWatch, the company can’t yet provide iPhone 5 repairs because Apple charges vendors too much to obtain the needed parts. The company continued that “Currently, the Apple Store is the least expensive option for repairing damaged iPhone 5s”.
Most repair companies now charge users $250 to repair their device, $50 more than the price users would to pay to purchase the the device when signing up for a two-year service agreement. Without a contract, that same iPhone 5 would cost a user $649.99.
A study by SquareTrade, a device insurance company recently concluded that one in three iPhones were damaged this past year. Reportedly, iPhone repairs have cost users $6 billion since Apple introduced the iPhone six years ago. Users can purchase third-party warranties from firms other than Apple.
Repair firm iCracked, maintains that the pricing problem associated with internal components has only gotten worse with the iPhone 5.
It’s worth noting that users can purchase kits that allow them to replace components in some of Apple’s older devices on the cheap, and use tear-down guides provided by sites like iFixit to fix their devices at a reduced cost. However, most users don’t have the technical know-how and ability to perform extensive electronic repairs on their own.
For example, iFixit rates the difficulty of replacing the iPhone 5’s display assembly as “moderate”. Purchasing a display assembly will cost a user $199.95, plus the cost of the tools needed to get the job done, which will run users an additional $25.
All costs included, it’s simply more cost effective for users to purchase a warranty or buy a case that protects their iPhone 5.
