It's official: Microsoft has unveiled the Xbox One, its newest gaming console and entertainment system. While many of the features were met with positive reviews on social media, those loyal to other video game consoles also took the liberty of sounding off with their own opinions.
With the PlayStation 4 expected to to hit stores this holiday season, Xbox One expected later this year and other consoles such as Wii U and OUYA on the market, we want to know: Where will you put your money?

Apple Licensed iOS Scrolling Patent to Nokia, Offered It to Samsung Too?

Apple licensed an iOS software patent to Nokia and IBM– reportedly related to scrolling, especially the part where over-scrolling reveals a textured background.
When Apple and Samsung reached a settlement over a patent battle last summer and withdrew complaints from the U.S. International Trade Commission, Apple not only paid up a one-time check but also forked over ongoing royalties to Nokia. One of the items Apple licensed to Nokia and IBM– is reportedly the iOS scrolling patent. This by itself demonstrates that Apple lost a major fight as the Cupertino company was never so willing to give away code, especially if that bit was referring to iOS.
What’'s even more interesting is that Apple reportedly offered the license to the same patent to Samsung during failed settlement negotiations in November 2010. This, of course, in a context in which the late Steve Jobs wanted to "destroy Android" because he regarded it as being a stolen product. There's no information on why those specific negotiations failed (or whether others are ongoing with lawsuits between the two companies now existing on almost every continent).

In that Nokia-Apple war settled last summer, which took place in a courtroom instead of the market, Nokia had initially sued Apple at the end of 2009 over ten GSM, UMTS, and Wi-Fi related patents allegedly infringed by Cupertino in its iPhones; Apple got back in the game with a lawsuit against Espoo for alleged infringement of thirteen Apple patents

Samsung to invest $9.3 billion in R&D to help boost smartphone competitiveness

Korean electronics giant is to invest over 10 trillion won ($9.3 billion) on research and development in an attempt to enhance its global competitiveness in the electronics, semiconductor and mobile phone industries, allocating funds to developing software within the company, Yonhap News reveals.

The company is said to have already invested nearly 5 trillion won in research and development in the first half of the year, accounting for 6.5% of its sales, with expenditures expected to increase in the coming quarter. Samsung spent 9.4 trillion won in 2010, with sources believing it will surpass 10 trillion won by the end of the year.

Samsung has an established record of R&D investment, controlling 100,542 patents worldwide at the end of last year. Of its huge number of patents, 4,551 were registered in the U.S, placing the company second behind IBM in terms of patents secured in a 12-month period. Samsung has been placed in the patent race in the North American market for five years in a row.

Despite this, Samsung still finds itself defending itself in the face of legal action from smartphone rivals Apple, which accuses the Korean vendor of copying the design of its iPhone and iPad products, securing injunctions on sales of three of Samsung’s smartphones and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in both Europe and Australia.
